Challenges and Barriers Faced by Blind and Visually Impaired Users on Social Media: A Systematic Literature Review
Universal Access in the Information Society, volume 24, pages 3359-3388
Abstract
The rapid growth of social media usage includes an increasing number of blind and visually impaired (BVI) users who face distinct accessibility challenges on these platforms. This study conducts a systematic literature review of 54 peer-reviewed publications to identify and categorize the primary accessibility issues impacting BVI users on social media. Key challenges include complex navigation, insufficient multimedia descriptions, and limited integration of assistive technologies, all of which hinder BVI users’ engagement and interaction with content. The analysis also reveals gaps in platform-specific accessibility features and inconsistencies in applying accessibility standards. By highlighting these issues, this review offers targeted solutions and practical recommendations for social media developers and accessibility experts to enhance digital inclusivity for BVI users. The insights provided aim to inform the development of more accessible and universally designed social media experiences.
